How can we minimize the environmental impacts of sterilization packaging?

4.10.2021

Wipak, together with Päijät-Häme Joint Authority for Health and Wellbeing, and Lassila & Tikanoja (an operator in the Finnish circular economy), have created a collective Sustainability Challenge for students of Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the Technical University of Denmark (DTU).

Facing the question, “How can we minimize the environmental impacts of sterilization packaging and increase recycling of medical packaging waste?”, students will have to investigate different materials from an environmental point of view. They must suggest ways to lower the CO2 emissions of packaging and how to increase sorting and recycling of non-contaminated packaging waste in hospitals, as well as how this sorting should be organized in an operation room, and the requirements recycling will set for the hospital’s infrastructure. We also look forward to hearing their potential solutions for utilizing recycled, clean sterilization packaging materials.

Their findings will be available in December. This project is part of the activities and company collaborations run by the City of Lahti as European Green Capital 2021. To find out more, contact us at steriking@wipak.com with the subject Sustainability Challenge.
